Souvenir Photograph Album of Black Family, Baltimore.
Very rare photograph collection of extended African American family, likely from the Baltimore, MD, area. 60+ cabinet cards, CDVs, tintypes, (some w/ hand-coloring), of men, women and children, ranging from 1860s-1920s. Highlights include group photograph of well-dressed men and women, likely a church congregation, assembled in front of a brick building, Reverend Joseph G(...) at center with Holy Bible on adjacent chair, c. 1890; photograph of 4 young men and women, men w/ boater hats, 1 w/ fraternity or choir symbol on sweater. Inscribed in pen on verso, “Photo taken on roof of 539 N. Bond St.,??1925??” Note w/ photo lists names: “Lewis, Charles, Miriam, Vashti.” Extra page of album added on black paper, w/ 9 photos laid down, w/ pen inscriptions of same names. Also in album is a newspaper clipping, c. 1922, about “Bishop Brooks’ New School in Monrovia, Liberia.” Baltimore photographers incl. Hebbel, M. Stahn, (both N. Gay Sts.), Ashman, London Studios, Russell, Clinedinst, M.D. Trainor, Balto. Photo. Co., William Wittkopf and Bell Studios; also in album are Clifford (Phila.) and C.M. Bell (Washington, DC) photographers. Velvet album in poor condition; photos generally good to very good condition, some age-appropriate wear and soiling. Should be seen.
