Description
Album containing about 33 cabinet gelatin silver photographs, including 3 African American women, 1 West Point cadet in uniform, plus 3 photographs placed in loose. Contemporary full leather photograph album with “W. D. W./ Bates ‘84” in gilt on album’s front cover. Album worn, lacking spine, considerable staining and wear to album’s covers. Photographs are mostly very good to near fine, occasional variation. The photos of black women, who are wearing formal clothing, are as follows: ++ [1st] Full-length photograph by Blackshear, Macon Ga. (so specified on original backing). Back is signed and inscribed (town’s name is illegible, but “Ever your Friend, Hallie L. Brown… Green Co.”) Foxing mostly to backing, color change, very good. ++ [2nd] Half-length. Pencilled on backing: “Color Up Nicely.” Pencilled on verso of backing: “ms Lydia Philips/ Amissville/ Va./ 400.” (Brinkmeier’s Pictures credited on backing’s verso, with locations listed in Wheeling; Moundsville, W. Va., Sisterville, W. Va.; Martin’s Ferry; and Bellaire.) Short tear to right edge of photo, backing has a little foxing and staining, very good. ++ [3rd] Nearly full length leaning against a stone column or railing. (Backing credits Biddle in Xenia, Ohio). The person’s name is not specified on the backing, but “Kate Me” is pencilled on the contemporary paper slip that separates this photo’s backing from the backing of the photo on the other side of the album sleeve. Photo: 3 7/8" x 5 3/8". Card: 4 1/4" x 6 1/2". Slight foxing, mostly to backing, near fine. Should be seen.
