Large archive of materials related to the activities of Dr. Martin Luther King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, 1966-1968. Includes file copies of statements, speeches, reports and SCLC membership cards, the first edition of SOUL FORCE magazine and what might be the last biography of Dr, King, edited by him as President of the SCLC . Membership ID cards consist of 3 SCLC cards for Stoney Cooks, 1 of which is signed “Martin L. King Jr.," likely by King's secretary, Dora E. McDonald, and 1 card for Thomas Offenberger for the “Poor Peoples Campaign.” About 30 items. ++ Stoney Cooks' SCLC identification card signed "Martin L. King Jr" by King's secretary during King's time as President of the Southern Christian Leadership conference). Stoney Cooks’ name is typed. Remainder of text is typed, including Dec. 31, 1968 expiration date. Cooks’ photo mounted to right of the text. 2 1/8” x 3 3/8”. Very good. Verso unsigned. ++ 2 SCLC identification cards stamped “Ralph David Abernathy.” Remainder of text printed. Each with photo mounted to right of its text. Both signed by Stoney Cooks on verso. Printed expiration dates: “December 31, 1969” and “December 31, 1971.” 2 1/8” x 3 3/8”. Very good. ++ "Poor Peoples Campaign" ID card, giving the address and blood type of SCLC’s press agent, Thomas Offenburger. Foxing. ++ “Thou Shalt Not Stand Idly By…” 2-leaf flyer for Sunday Evening with S.N.C.C. 4to. Accompanied by postcard for the same SNCC program, printed with “Please reserve March 20, 1966…” Very good. ++ First edition of SOUL FORCE, the Official Journal of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Vol 1, No 1 (Feb. 15, 1968). Folio. Expected toning associated with newspaper-quality paper. ++ TLS by Abernathy to Stoney Cooks, responding to Cooks’ letter of resignation from his position as SNCC’s Director of Public Relations. “I have made two visits to your home in which I discussed the matter with you and your lovely wife on the first evening… Reverend Bernard Scott Lee was with me in the discussion… even into the early morning…. Hardly lead myself to believe that you will leave me, especially at this critical hour in our War Against Repression. Near fine. ++ About 12 typewritten resolutions and/or photocopies of resolutions by the SCLC Board, Apr. 13-14, 1966, plus photocopies of 2 other SCLC documents. 4to.
