Archive of statements, drafts and addresses, almost all from Dr. Martin Luther King, c. 1966-1968, 2 with handwritten annotations by King. Includes draft with handwritten corrections of statement given by King on October 30, 1967, announcing that King, Rev. Ralph D. Abernathy and others are leaving to present themselves to the County Jail in Birmingham, AL, to pay a fine of $50 each and serve a prison sentence of 5 days. Accompanied by what appears to be a final version of this statement. Corrections in green ink in the hand of Thomas Offenberger, publicist for the SCLC with about 23 changes, deletions and additions in King’s hand in blue ink. Additional statement, May 22, 1966 with file copy red stamp of June 6, 1968, with 1 word correction apparently in King’s hand. Other examples include “The Crisis in American Cities,” August 15, 1967, “Tears of Love,” excerpt, from King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” and transcript of question and answer period of news conference, January 12, 1966. Approx. 15 pieces in various sizes and formats, one booklet, some duplicates, some with old water stains. Should be examined. Provenance: Collection of Stoney & Shirley Cooks.
