Description
Korea, Choson, 18th century or earlier Korean T'aenghwa tempera on silk of exceptional dimensions, depicting Buddha Tejaprabha seated on a throne between Suyabrabha, the Bodhisattva of the sun and Chandraprbha, that of the moon and surrounded by a multitude of the heavenly deities and various anthropomorphic personifications. A superb example of Buddhist painting, it presents the characteristic Taoist and Shamanist composition, typical of the complex Korean religion. Important for its quality and size, it was certainly made for a main temple to be placed behind the large central sculpture. It is well preserved, and maintains almost all the bright polychrome, characteristic of Korean paintings of this period. lxh 218 x 135 cm
