Description
Circle of Paul Bril (Flemish, 1554-1626) An extensive river landscape with the story of Abraham and the Ram in the foreground inscribed lower right "Gen:XXII" and bears initials "PB" on the bridge lower left water and bodycolour on paper, with another 18th Century Flemish watercolour on card, 14 x 20cm (2) 20 x 26cm (8 x 10in)
Condition
Trimmed on the left-hand side, unframed, and with oxidation and retouchings. Small area of loss and abrasion. Small retouchings which have discoloured. Some staining. Likely to be trimmed - paint layer goes right up to left hand edge. Support in stable condition. Possibly laid down. The 18th Century German hand reads: "Paul Bril fec Unten links über dem Brückchen im Wasser signirt PB". Paul Bril fec[it] unten links über dem Brückchen im Wasser signiert PB' A much later hand obviously. ie 'signed PB at bottom left in the water, above the little bridge' Which means: Paul Bril painted this Signed PB bottom left over the little bridge in the water Second watercolour is unframed, browned, and with trimmed corners.
