Description
Meiji period (1868-1913). The large porcelain ovoid form on a tall flaring foot ring, painted in underglaze blue to depict various birds including thirteen swallows, a hawk, an owl, and two peacocks among pine trees around the body between bands of cranes flying through clouds. The jar is covered with two lids; the outer lid surmounted by rabbit finial, the inner lid topped with a pinecone finial. Underglaze blue mark arranged in two lines, partially translated “Nippon Seto Kato….Zo†or “[Made in] Japan in Seto by [an untranslated member of the] Kato [family]. Approx. 22 1/2 by 10 in., 57.1 by 25.5 cm.
