Description
Nepal, 19th-early 20th century AD. Cast bronze applique of the god Yama in the form of a buffalo; the god has an open mouth with lolling tongue, third eye, large curving horns with cobras above each ear; the god wears a crown with three skulls crowned by flaming jewels. Yama's name means restrainer and he is the ruler of the dead. He accompanies the deceased to the realm of the ancestors. 6.3 kg, 40cm (15 3/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired before 1980.
