Item Details
Description
Two constructivism watercolors, each with pencil or traces of pencil on heavy cardstock, both untitled, attributed to Laszlo Moholy-Nagy (Hungarian,1895-1946), each dated 1923. One is signed twice on the verso, once in ink with the artist's initials, and again in pencil. The other is dated but unsigned. One measures 5 x 4 3/4 inches; the larger piece measures 7 x 4 5/8 inches. Good overall condition (some foxing and staining). Unframed.

Provenance: Gene Mako, Budapest/Los Angeles, CA
Tobiah Mintz, Los Angeles
Presumably acquired from the above by the former owner's
family, circa 1970-80

Constructivism was an artistic and architectural philosophy that originated in Russia beginning in 1919, a rejection of the idea of autonomous art. The movement was in favour of art as a practice for social purposes. Constructivism had a great effect on modern art movements of the 20th century, influencing major trends such as the Bauhaus and De Stijl movements. Its influence was pervasive, with major impacts upon architecture, graphic and industrial design, theatre, film, dance, fashion and to some extent music. [Wikipedia]

AUTHENTICATION AND PROVENANCE OF ATTRIBUTED LOTS (and/or lots described as "in the manner of"): This lot is being offered as "attributed to" (or in the manner of) the named artist. Preston Hall Gallery is not a recognized authority on works by this artist and we have not submitted it to any expert or committee of experts for review or forensic examination. Authentication is not an exact science. Contrary opinions may exist and the lot in question may or may not be considered authentic, depending on the opinion of the examining expert or specialist. The signature, style, and composition of the work seem absolutely correct and are similar to pieces of known authenticity and provenance which we have seen or sold, although neither we nor the consignor can guaranty that the present lot is wholly or partly by the ascribed artist.

REGARDING PROVENANCE, we often rely on information provided to us by the consignor, family records or documents, estate papers, and/or other third parties. If you have questions about a lot's provenance, please ask them prior to bidding. Unless stated otherwise, no documents, letters or certificates of authenticity, or additional information concerning provenance will accompany the lot. We do not obtain written affidavits from consignors regarding provenance, so there may be inaccuracies. Demonstrable provenance can be an important factor in determining authenticity.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you require absolute certainty regarding a lot's attribution, its signature or any other identifying inscriptions or marks, date of creation, or history of ownership and if the lot's description or your personal or online examination of the lot in question does not address these issues to your satisfaction, WE STRONGLY URGE YOU NOT TO BID ON OR BUY THE LOT.
