Description
Greek, Apulian, southeastern Italy, ca.325-300 BCE. Substantial red-figure oinochoe decorated with a female head portrayed in profile. The lady wears an ornate saccos leaving a bun projecting at rear, a spiked crown, a beaded necklace and long pendant earrings. The white details ‘gilded’ with light ochre. The woman is facing what appears to be a torch. Her neck is flanked by volutes with emerging fan palmettes. Flowers in the field, a band of dotted ovolo above, a wave pattern below. The style is related to the White Saccos-Kantharos Group, which was active towards the end of the 4th century BC. H. 24.2 cm (9.5 in)

Intact. The rather thick glaze peeled off along the handle and in front of the decorated frame; the area painted over as on old fashioned restorations. Some old scratches (preliminary sketch?) close to the eye. Red wash on the reserved areas.
