Description
Greek, Apulian, southeastern Italy, ca.325-300 BCE. Substantial red-figure oinochoe decorated with a female head portrayed in profile. The lady wears an ornate saccos leaving a bun projecting at rear, a spiked crown, a beaded necklace and long pendant earrings. The white details ‘gilded’ with light ochre. The woman is facing what appears to be a torch. Her neck is flanked by volutes with emerging fan palmettes. Flowers in the field, a band of dotted ovolo above, a wave pattern below. The style is related to the White Saccos-Kantharos Group, which was active towards the end of the 4th century BC. H. 24.2 cm (9.5 in)
