Item Details
Description
Greece, South Italy, Apulia, ca. 4th century BCE. A beautiful shallow bowl on a small round foot. The exterior has a waviform design around the edges. In the interior of the bowl, filling the entire space, is a profile view in the style known as the "lady of fashion" motif. She wears a kekryphalos, a type of hair covering, earrings, and a bead necklace. These figures are often thought to represent brides, or youthful women, and they are found painted onto pottery that was made to be placed in the tombs of women. On the back of the vessel are some holes pierced through the foot which were made so that it could be hung up on the wall of a tomb. In the Apulian style, white/yellow paint gives fine details to her portrait. Size: 6.55" W x 1.55" H (16.6 cm x 3.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private Ventura County, CA collection
