Description
This cast iron fountain was forged at the renowned Val D’Osne foundry in Paris, France. The statue group portrays a scene depicted in a 16th-century French poem ("Debat de Folie et d’Amour" or "The Contest of Love") by Louise Labé, where Love (Cupid) and Folly endure a falling out during a festival at Jupiter ‘s palace. Folly has struck Love so hard that he goes blind. The statue portrays the now-impared Love being led by Folly with a jester’s rattle. The base of the statue bears the foundry’s mark as well as the address, "58B Voltaire, Paris". Another casting of the group sold in a Sotheby’s Amsterdam sale in May 2007 for 276,000 Euros. 57.5"H x 31" W x 39" L
