Alfred Kubin (1877-1959)
The work of the Austrian painter, graphic artist, book illustrator and writer Alfred Kubin is characterized by depictions of fantastic dream visions. The 'Austrian Goya' was mainly influenced by the visionary and symbolic works by James Ensor, Odilon Redon, Edvard Munch, Max Klinger and Francisco de Goya. After he had gained international renown as illustrator of famous works of world literature (by Edgar Allan Poe, Franz Kafka, Fjodor Dostojewski etc.) as early as in the 1920s, his works were defamed as 'degenerate' in the days of the National Socialists. His oeuvre of drawings was only honored at an old age. Accordingly, he was awarded the 'Vienna Prize for Visual Arts', the 'Grand Austrian State Prize for Visual Arts' and the 'Austrian Decoration for Science and Art' in the 1950s. Today Alfred Kubin counts among the most important artists of the 20th century and his works realize record prices in international auctions.
