Yayoi Kusama designed a fashion collection for Louis Vuitton in 2012. The present photograph was part of the advertisement campaign, which was realized with spacial installations by the artist.

Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929)

Yayoi Kusama, who suffered from the strict education and difficult conditions in the extreme fascist military state Japan, began her artistic education at the School of Arts and Crafts in Kyoto. Even though, the chances for female artist at the time in Japan were very low, she had six solo exhibitions within the first years of studying. She decided to move to New York when some of her works were exhibited at the 18th Biennial at the Brooklyn Museum in 1955. Kusama returned to Japan in 1973. Since then she lives in a mental asylum on a voluntary basis to cure her hallucinations and panic fear of phallic objects. She is able to continue her work as an artist here. (tm)
