Of the major South African sculptural traditions, Shona carvers are famous for their unparalleled degree of formal interpretation. Scholars debate as to the meaning of Shona design, but research suggests the surface incisions may relate to female cicatrization marks; the Shona ascribe the term nyora to both phenomena.
The neckrest is in very good condition with old, stable cracks in the pillow and bottom of the base. There are very minor traces of insect damage. The piece measures 5 ½ x 6 x 3 in. (length x width x height).
