Description:
Frances Chun, Photo portrait, inscribed "To my 'Irish Daddy', It's been a very pleasant two weeks sharing the 'mic' with you. Always sing pretty, Frances Chun", also signed in Chinese. 8 x 10" (Conner-Geddes Studio [Cleveland, Ohio, ca. 1946-48]: and pictorial photo holder, "Charlie Low's Forbidden City, San Francisco", with Low's printed signature in English and Chinese on inside cover, and inserted photo of a couple at the nightclub.
Low opened his legendary night club in San Francisco in 1938, featuring exclusively Asian performers who were wildly popular with visiting tourists during and after World War II - to the chagrin of conservative Chinatown elders who frowned on "outgoing" young Chinese women like singer Frances Chun, displaying their talents in public to "ethnically-mixed crowds". Low's club inspired the 1950s book and film Flower Drum Song; Chun and Lee were later featured in Arthur Dong's award-winning 1989 documentary about the club, which was also the setting for a recent best-selling novel.
