Description
Russia, 19th century
Representation of St. Basil the Great flanked by the monastics St. Peter and St. Irina
Reverse with two sponki
Overall dimensions: 35.5 x 30.5 cm
Good condition
All saints are depicted frontal, facing the viewer, each one dressed according to ones role in the Church. St. Peter wears modest garments and the Great Schema, which designates that he reached the highest level of monasticism. St. Basil the Great is dressed in Episcopal garments, signing in benediction and holding the Gospels. St. Irina holds a small cross, an indication that she suffered as a martyr. The upper part of the icon shows Christ emerging from the clouds and extending both hands in blessing against radiating skies. The punched, gold background is framed by a border decorated with recurring foliage scrolls, flower buds and vines on colorful ground. The three saints are not related between them and their presence on the panel suggests that they were chosen by the patron who commissioned the icon.
The icon appears in very good condition with slightly rubbed gold paint and minor color abrasions in the garments of Christ. Under UV light some touch-ups, especially around the cloud underneath Christ, in the garments and the faces of the figures become visible. The piece measures 35.5 x 30.5 cm. (amb)
