Description
Charles Le Maire Original Costume Drawings For The Robe/Demetrius and the Gladiators/Captain from Castile/And More - The legendary costumer designer, Charles Le Maire, considered the greatest and most innovative of his time, won one of his three Oscars© for the epic "The Robe" (1953), the first film to be shot in CinemaScope. It is considered a triumph of filmmaking in both its directing, editing, photography, art direction, music, stunts, and writing (by then blacklisted Albert Maltz). It's the emotional charged story of Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton), who is assigned to lead the crucifixion of Christ, and thus is given Christ's robe, which causes him torment for what he has done and a sets him on a search for some kind of redemption. There were many religious epics before, but none with this sense of realism, instead of "DeMille" type pageantry. Special mention has always been made to the costumes of Le Maire. Prints of his beautifully detailed drawings for his creations have been displayed in books, libraries and museums, but rarely has any of his original artwork ever surfaced. That is until this recently discovered cache of his original drawings have become available from his personal Estate. This remarkable portfolio contains Le Maire's original concept drawings from "The Robe", as well as several other films he designed of the same period including "Demetrius and the Gladiators" (1954), which was the sequel to "The Robe", and as a great bonus, initial oversize painstaking pencil drawings and note-concepts for the Tyrone Power, Jean Peters adventure classic about the invasion of Mexico by Cortez, "Captain from Castile" (1947). There are over 45 drawings, sketches, concepts and notes, all in Le Marie's hand. They are all individually sealed in special custom plastic sleeves and housed in his original portfolio. An astonishing find!
