Description
First half 19th century, 255 x 185 cm, Central Asia, Uzbekistan

Collection VOK: Suzani 30

The field design of this Shakhrisyabz suzani is unusual. Its style appears to be influenced by Indian Muhgal textiles. Beginning from a starting point in the lower left-hand corner of the field, a sweeping petrol vine decorated with twigs and leaves meanders through the field. It bears large palmette-like flowers in red and pink, with details picked out in gold and blue; pointing in different directions, they emphasise the sprawling character of the design. The composition is lively and informal, quite unlike the disciplined and precise appearance of other compositions from the same provenance. In contrast to the dynamic design of the field, the border of circular blossoms surrounded by fine vines and diagonal floral clusters radiates a sense of calm. – Well preserved. Backed with canvas.
