Gotthard Johnny Friedlaender (1912-1992)

Friedlaender, who was born in Silesia, studied at the State Academy for Art and Arts and Crafts in Wroclaw (then: Breslau). He has had his first exhibitions in Dresden when he was only 18 years old. He was interned by the National socialists in 1933 and immigrated to Czechoslovakia in 1935 where he had further exhibitions of his etchings. He moved to Paris 1937 and got interned again from 1939 -1943 when he joined the British army against Hitler. The etchings from this time are some of the most impressive ones in Friedlaender’s œuvre.
