The present photograph is a work by Nobuyoshi Araki, known as one of the world's most successful, still living Japanese artists. His works are related to the themes ‘city’, ‘woman’ and ‘nature’, which he regards as metaphors for sexuality, birth, life and death. While his woman’s portraits may appear threatening and shocking in some sense, the artist has formulated a surprisingly contrary statement with his delicate series ‘Skyscape’ which depicts various beautiful views of skies. The unique piece offered here is titled ‘Color Landscape’ and clearly refers to the series mentioned before. The photo was taken from the roof balcony of the artist’s apartment just after the death of his beloved wife Yoko.
The C-print is in good condition considering its age. It is verso signed with black felt pen ‘Nobuyoshi ARAKI’. There are four very light crease marks at the lower right edge. Besides, the surface shows two light finger prints in the upper two corners. The black painted wooden frame is in good condition with only small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 85 x 115.5 cm and the sheet size is 69 x 105.5 cm.
