Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 200 BCE - 200 CE. Quite an impressive and animated sculptural work! This Jalisco kneeling female wears a red skirt, headdress, ear ornaments, and nose ring. The rest of her body is extensively adorned with intricate black tattooed geometric designs or body paint -across her chest, along her arms, as well as highlighting her face - particularly the eyes and mouth. She boasts a lively facial expression and is engaged in a musical ritual. Notice her open mouth, perhaps indicative of chanting, with teeth so meticulously delineated and her dance-like posture with one outstretched arm and the other shaking a shell-shaped rattle. This gesture is only presented in female figures of the Jalisco. Quite an exciting piece! Size: 13-3/4"H x 9-3/4"W.
