Description
Pre-Columbian, El Salvador/Guatemala/Honduras, Copador Style, Mayan, ca 550 to 850 CE. Large cocoa cup simply decorated with two bands of red pseudo glyphs, one top and one bottom, framed by solid red registers, a large reserved band of orange in the center. Did you know that chocolate was first cultivated by the Ancient Mayans? Perhaps odd to us, the way they consumed it was not like the sweet treats we know today. They preferred to imbibe thick, bitter, frothy chocolate drinks served cold. Imagine this vessel filled with such a beverage! Quite a large example, measuring 9-1/2" H x 6-5/8" D.
