Fritz Heinemann's bronze sculpture ‘Returm from the Fields’ was installed in Dessau on 12 August 1912 to mark the 700th anniversary of Anhalt. The Dessau people affectionately call the sculpture ‘Harkenjule’ [Rake Juliet]. After the figure was melted during World War II, the city of Dessau installed a copy on the Seminarplatz in 1970. The plaster model was kept for a long time by the sculptor Gustav Clemens and went to the Staatliche Gemäldegalerie Dessau after the artist's death in 1932. The Dessau artist Martin Hadelich restored the damaged plaster model, and the company Noack in Leipzig procured the new cast. In addition to the present exemplary, Gladbeck casted the figural group in form of small bronzes.

The bronze is signed with ‘Fritz Heinemann’ on the plinth, and marked with the foundry stamp of AKTIEN-GESELLSCHAFT GLADENBECK / BERLIN FRIEDRICHSHAGEN to one side. It is in good condition, showing some losses of the patina, especially affecting the removable rake. The rake is slightly bent. The overall height, with plinth, is 86 cm.

Fritz Heinemann (1864-1932)

From 1883 to 1886, Fritz Heinemann studied at the Nuremberg Art School and then moved to the Berlin Academy of Arts, where he studied under Albert Wolff, Fritz Schaper and Gerhard Janensch until 1889. In 1888, he participated for the first time at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. From 1889 to 1905, Heinemann was a professor at the educational establishment of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin. He traveled to Paris and Rome. Heinemann produced monuments, tombs, genre figures, busts and small bronzes. Some of his figures are close to the sculptural work of Auguste Rodin.
