A sober piece of silverware by a highly acclaimed English silversmith
This silver tea urn is a piece by the London maker John Scofield and features a very balanced and perfectly crafted design and execution. The simple vase shape is decorated with subtle bead and reel elements. High handles are applied to the sides, the front is decorated with a coat of arms of the Kemble of Wydell and Stratton Family in an ornate oval reserve, the lid is engraved with the crest. The finial of the valve is also made of silver.
The samovar is hallmarked underneath with the date letter ‘I’ (1784), the town mark, the standard mark and the maker's mark ‘IS’. It is in good condition with only minor signs of age and wear. The handle of the valve has been reattached. The height measures 36 cm and the weight is approx. 1,150 g. (tfa)
