Description
AEUC – Basaltic Eucrite
Sahara Desert, Western Sahara

Dimensions (height x width x depth): 3.6 x 0.3 x3.9 in. (9.1 x 0.8 x 9.9 cm)

Provenance: the Macovich Collection, New York City

Unlike most meteorites, eucrites have a precise return address—they originate from the asteroid Vesta—the second largest asteroid in our solar system. The origin of eucrites was first determined by spectroscopic analysis and then later confirmed from the data transmitted by NASA’s Dawn spacecraft that orbited the asteroid Vesta in 2011 for a year. This is a very important specimen as it is the main mass of NWA 8395, which is to say that it is the largest portion of this meteorite event—in fact, this is almost the entire meteorite. Found in 2014 by a meteorite hunter in Western Sahara, it has a Macovich Collection provenance. The scientific abstract of NWA 8395 which appeared in the Meteorite Bulletin is included in this offering. The piece measures 3.6 x 0.3 x3.9 in. (height x width x depth) and weighs 1.2 pounds.
