Chodor Chuval, Turkmenistan 3rd quarter 19th century, 2ft. 1in. x 3ft. 8in. 64 x 112 cm
Condition: pile low but even, field color corroded, sides and ends reduced, slight damage to upper left corner, otherwise very good. Provenance: Khanate of Khiva
Age: Third Quarter of the 19th Century

Knot type: Asymmetrical, open right. Wool, z2. hor: sq. inch: 09 126 vert: 14
Warp: Wool of goat hair(?), brown gray, natural, z2s. No depression.
Weft: Wool, gray brown, natural, z2s. Two shoots alternating. One slightly wavier that the other.
Sides: Original not extant.
Ends: Original not extant.
Colors: (7) Aubergine, dark salmon, yellow ivory, bottle green, dark blue, light brown, pale yellow.
Design: On a aubergine ground are three columns of three deeply lobed chuval guls. The guls are quartered in ivory and salmon and the interiors quartered in aubergine and green or blue. Each of the interior quadrants contains an "X" device in salmon or ivory. The guls are outlined in dark blue. The secondary guls, of which there are four complete and twelve partial around the edges of the field, are simple chuval guls. They are done in the same colors: as the main guls but with simple triangles in the interior quadrants. They are outlined in green. The main border in of the "X" and diamond type. It is done in field tones on a aubergine ground. There are "S" type guard borders on either side also in field tones. There are dotted guard stripes in ivory and brown. The lower elem has an aubergine ground with columns of two large ashiks each in salmon and ivory alternating. The large ashiks are separated by a cruciform diamond device in ivory, brown, salmon and blue. There are columns smaller ashiks between in salmon, green, blue or ivory.
