Ersari Chuval, Turkmenistan mid 19th cent., 3ft. 1in. x 4ft. 8in. 94 x 142 cm
Condition: good, full pile, excellent color, damage along the center top edge, area of loss in center lower
elem, slight loss at sides and lower elem
Provenance: Amu Darya region, Central Asia
Age: Middle of the 19th Century
Size: 03’ 01†x 04’ 08â€
Knot type: Asymmetrical, open right. Wool. two ply, cotton hor: sq. inch: 08 96 vert: 12 (white only) single (?) ply. Woven upside down.
Warp: Wool, ivory and brown mixed, natural, z2s. No warp depression.
Weft: Two shots alternating, over and under. Each shot made of of a single strand of z spun brown, natural wool.
Sides: Original not extant.
Ends: Original not extant.
Colors: (6) Red, medium blue, dark blue, yellow, white (cotton), brown.
Design: This design of this chuval has sometimes been called a “Singing Arrow.†In the center of the red main field are three vertically stacked “lozenge†shaped devices. At the center of each “lozenge†is a rosette done in blue with small white highlights. Extending from the horizontal axis of each “lozenge†in an ashik tipped arm done in white and blue. At both sides of the field are three large multi colored vertical zigzag lines. Also spread around the field are small rosette tertiary devices. The main border in made up of multi colored “arrow†devices. The inner minor border contains small simple roundels done in alternating colors of white, yellow and blue. The outer minor border is a typical triangle mosaic done in red, yellow white and blue. The upper elem contains a row of simple flower forms with a blue and red “barber pole†line along the top edge. The lower elem also contains a row of the same simple plant forms (which have been partially cut off) above is a row the same blue tertiary devices seen in the main field. At the sides are red reserves again with the same blue rosettes.
