Tekke Chuval, Turkmenistan mid 19th cent., 2ft. 8in. x 3ft. 8in. 81 x 112 cm
Condition: excellent, almost full pile with just corrosion to the silk as would be expected of
a piece of this age, excellent colors, almost complete with just slight loss to the sides
Provenance: Akhal region, Turkmenistan
Age: Middle of the 19th Century
Size: 02’ 08†x 03’ 08â€
Knot type: Asymmetrical, open right. Wool, two ply and silk hor: sq. inch: 13 273 vert: 21 (magenta only)
Warp: Wool, light tan to ivory, natural, z2s. Flat back.
Weft: Wool, mixed browns, natural, two shoots, alternating.
Sides: Original not extant.
Ends: Top - ½ “ red wool, weft faced plain weave; then folded over; then ¾†natural tan wool, weft faced plain weave; then folded under and sewn down with brown wool. Bottom - original not extant.
Colors: (11) Liver red, apricot, red, magenta (silk), navy blue, medium blue, light blue, ivory, yellow, light brown, dark brown.
Design: On a liver red field is a row of three complete turret guls. There are three partial guls top and bottom. Between the turret guls are secondary guls consisting a various box devices in a cruciform layout. At the side are partial secondly guls. The guls are done in various filed tones with magenta silk highlights throughout. The main border is a box type with the boxes containing the “Union Jack†device. On either side of the main border is a single guard stripe consisting of flower designs in ivory alternating with checkered boxes done in blue and red. The lower elem contains diagonal rows of trefoil flowers done in two blues with yellow and ivory highlights. The upper elem reciprocal row of diamond devices done in reds and blues above is a double row of blue knots.
Condition: Excellent, almost full pile with just corrosion to the silk as would be expected of a piece of this age, excellent colors. Almost complete with just slight loss to the sides.
