Arabatchi Chuval, Turkmenistan mid 19th cent., 2ft. 10in. x 4ft. 7in. 86 x 140 cm
Condition: excellent colors, full pile, loss of main border on the left side, loss of outer guard stripe at the left, with a repair of the remains of the original reserve reattached, tear at center bottom that has been backed, upper edge is ragged with a brown backing added, other small holes and repairs

Warp: Wool, ivory, brown, natural, z2s. Brown warps occur in one area near center. No warp depression.
Weft: Two shoots alternating. Each shoot is made of of various combinations of a natural white cotton shoot and a light brown, natural wool shoot. Sometimes there is one shoot of each, other times both are used.
Sides: Original not extant.
Ends: Original not extant.
Colors: (7) Purple, orange, dark blue, light blue, light yellow, ivory, brown. Design: On a purple ground is a grid of four by four chuval guls. The guls are outlined in dark blue and quartered in orange and ivory. At the center of each gul is a quartered hexagon in purple and blue with a purple or orange hourglass device in each quadrant. Between are simple chemche secondary guls with partial guls at the top. bottom and sides. Around the main field is an inner border of kotchak crosses done in orange, light and dark blue with ivory highlights. The main border in made up of boxes with a flower form in each box, done in various field tones. At either side is an “S“ minor border in orange and purple. The are barber pole guard strips except the outer guard strip becomes an “x†and box motif. The lower elem has a purple ground and contains a row of classic Arabatchi flower forms. There are opposing comb devices between. At the top is a single row of kotchak “T†devices with at herringbone line above. The “T‘s†are done in orange, light and dark blue.
