Ersari Chuval, Turkmenistan second half 19th cent., 3ft. 1in. x 3ft. 10in. 94 x 117 cm
Condition: good pile, excellent colors, left main border missing, loss of the outer right reserve, small repair lower left elem
Provenance: Amu Darya region, eastern Turkmenistan.
Age: Second Half of the 19th Century

Knot type: Asymmetrical, open right, wool. Made inverted. hor: sq. inch: 08 96 vert: 12
Warp: Wool, tan, natural, z2s. Moderately depressed.
Weft: Wool, tan, natural. Two shoots.
Sides: Original not extant.
Ends: Original not extant.
Colors: Liver red, brick red, medium green, indigo blue, yellow, ivory, light brown.
Design: On a liver red field are three “ikat†type designs in blue and green with yellow and brick red highlights and ivory and brown outlining. The three “ikat†devices are divided by a vertical blue stripe. The field also has groups of “tree†devices top and bottom done in yellow and ivory with red trunks. The main border uses the box and kotchak design in ivory, blue and green on a field tone ground. The boxes top and bottom contain a square of four diamonds in blue and red with polychrome highlighting in the centers. The boxes on the side borders contain polychrome cruciform devices. The minor borders are consist of ivory and brown “X‘s†alternating with red boxes, outlined in brown. The lower elem uses a field tone ground and contains stylized trees in alternating green and blue, each topped with a kotchak. The trees use yellow and ivory highlights. Between the trees are polychrome box and cruciform
devices. The upper elem, also on a field tone ground, contains what might be the tops of the trees continuing from the lower elem and in the same colors. Each topped with a blue kotchak. Between each of these treetops are oating kotchaks in green. Above is a split polychrome herringbone.
