c. 1876 Indian Wars Era Original Hand-Painted Portrait of United States Army General George Armstrong Custer
(GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER), (1839-1876).
This original Hand-Painted General George Custer Portrait measures 21.75” x 16.75”, Choice Very Fine. Text at the lower left corner of this Painting reads, “G. George Armstrong Custer 1839-1876.” There is no artist signature, date or place. Painted image of George Custer in his military uniform, with General’s stars, in a classic pose wearing his Calvary hat. Custer has a strong, stern look upon his face. The portrait is on heavy painters board, retaining nice contrast and coloration with a tan painted background and some chalk used in highlighting. The text at lower left is by the artist and appears to be of the Indian Wars period in its style. A rare and historic original Portrait of United States Army General George Armstrong Custer.
George A. Custer, 1839-1876, was one of the most celebrated and controversial Civil War figures. Graduating last in his 1861 West Point class, he built a reputation for daring and brilliance, and in 1863 became a brigadier general. Until the end of the war, Custer fought with the utmost distinction in all the cavalry battles of the Army of the Potomac. He commanded a division in the Shenandoah and cut off Lee's escape at Appomattox. After the war he remained in the army fighting Indians and died at Little Big Horn.
