35 black and white photographs, most approximately 8½x10", captions in English and Arabic on mounts. Housed in an embossed full leather album.
Album in commemoration of 10 years of independence from Italy, presented to Lewis Clark, personal representative of the President of the United States (John F. Kennedy), who had the rank of Special Ambassador to this anniversary celebration. The album is consigned by the granddaughter of Ambassador Clark. Images portray the improvements in infrastructure, agriculture, industry, education, governmental and social issues, etc. Libya gained its independence from Italy in 1951 under the reign of King Idris, in September 1969, a small group of military officers led by 27-year-old army officer Muammar Gaddafi staged a coup d'état against King Idris, launching the Libyan Revolution. Gaddafi ruled Libya until his overthrow and death in 2011.
