A printed introduction reads: “ In the evening of the 23rd day of May, 1891, the following gentlemen left St. Louis by the invitation of Mr. H. C. Pierce and Mr. W. H. Gregg on a special car of the Wabash Railroad, furnished by Co. J. F. How, to visit Cedar Island Lodge, on Brule River Wisconsin: Mr. H. C. Peirce, Mr. James f. Howe, Mr. J. C. Van Blarcom, Mr. John D. Johnson, Mr. Frank L. Ridgley, Mr. William P. Coleman, Mr. John P. Neville, Mr. Charles B. Greeley, Mr. Estill McHenry. Reaching St. Paul in the afternoon of the 25th inst., they stopped at the Aberdeen Hotel, the party being met, out of the city, by William H. Bliss, whose rooms at the above hotel were headquarters, and whose hospitality was genial and kindly. A visit was paid, the 26th, to the city of Minneapolis. The visiting party were composed of eleven men (some additions were made in St. Paul) nine of them got lost, and messrs. Ridgley and McHenry did not find them until they returned, broken down, thirsty and exhausted from their search, to the hospitable hotel at St. PaulThat night they left for Brule River. Reaching the station, some walked, some went in the wagons with the ‘truck ‘ to the river, four miles away, to take boats for camp. Eight miles up from Joe Green’s house, on an island in Brule river, known as Cedar Island, is the lovely spot selected for the picturesque house, which was a charming home for three memorable days” Terrific photos, including some likely never seen of the famous 'robber baron'. Also included are two other albums filled with more than 600 captioned photographs, 1920s-1950s, apparently kept by Enid Blenheim Richards, wife of Henry Clay Pierce’s grandson, Eben Richards. The photos center on Rivenoaks, the Tuxedo Park, NY estate designed by James Lord Brown later purchased by Eben Richard’s father, (and which by the photos appears to also be the home of Eben Jr. and Enid Richards and, eventually, their son Eben III.) Many exterior and interior photos of the great house, including a portion of the Anders Zorn portrait of Minnie Finlay Pierce, (Henry Clay Pierce’s first wife,) over a mantle. The photos offer an intimate glimpse of the playgrounds of the New York elite at that time, including: Ocean House at Watch Hill, Rhode Island; various named cottages at Bass Rocks in Gloucester, Mass; Siasconset, Nantucket; the Wausinet Inn, Nantucket: Annisquam, Mass; Southampton; Hyannisport; Palm Springs, California; Buena Vista, Miami, various ocean liners, the Hackley school, Tarrytown; Harvard games and graduations, etc. Great fashions, cars (1929 Auburn Cabriolet) and a terrific photograph of Admiral Mark Kerr and LT. Col E. W. Steadman with the Hadley Paige aircraft behind them, likely around the time they were attempting to win the race to make the first trans-Atlantic crossing by air. The Richards raised show dogs and many images include dogs, Morris & Essex Kennel Club Dog Show, Madison Dog Show, Orange, N. J. Kennel Club Dog Show, etc. Four framed 8" x 10" press photos of Enid Richards with various dogs, two of the photos also including Eben III. (See Lot 611b for a painting by Perle Pierce Richards, daughter of Henry Clay Pierce, of a beloved family dog.)
