Description
JOHN GEOFFREY CARUTHERS LITTLE (CANADIAN, B.1928), ATTRIBUTED, LANDSCAPE PAINTING, oil on masonite, a captivating mountain scene with pronounced areas of impasto, done in an impressionistic style and featuring an alpine scene with castle or monastery atop a hill overlooking a valley. Signed "Little" lower right. Housed in a later frame. Mid 20th century. 15 1/2" x 19 1/2" sight, 20 1/2" x 24 1/2" OA.
Provenance: From the Ed & Kay Winnick collection, Sidney, NY.
Catalogue Note: John Geoffrey Caruthers Little ( b.1928) was born in Montreal and studied for two years at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. In 1947, he traveled to New York City to attend the Art Student's League under the tutelage of Will Barnet and Frank J. Reilly. Upon his return to Montreal in 1951, he worked for a short time as a draftsman with his father's architectural firm before moving to painting as a full-time profession. He is primarily known for his street scenes of Montreal and is one of Canada's most sought-after 20th-century artists. The present example, likely from his early career, may be a European alpine scene, possibly the result of a trip or the influence of another artist.
