Herrmann von Point - Artist of the 20th/21st century
Signed and inscribed lower right, ‘Herrmann v. Point / Oase Chetma”
Patinated wooden frame
Overall dimensions, framed: 80 x 82 cm
Very good condition
The present oil painting by Herrmann von Point is a copy of a painting by Maurice Bompard from 1890 (now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Marseille). Many European painters of the 19th century and early 20th century dedicated their works to the Islamic culture. Their interest was related to the growing domination of European powers over the Orient. Numerous paintings by Herrmann von Point address the topic of Orientalism, here with a view of a street near by the oasis of Chetma in Algeria.
The painting is signed and inscribed lower right, ‘Herrmann v. Point / Oase Chetma’. It is mounted in a patinated wooden frame and in very good condition with only minor wear. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 80 x 82 cm. The stretcher measures 49 x 63 cm. (cko)
