Description
Baltimore, Maryland, early 19th century, four line verse over two and half story brick building with central pediment, willow-like trees flanking the building, fenced yard with "eyeglass" gate, signed bottom "Caroline F. Barry", stitched on each side of verse, "JJ Barry" and "E Barry", arcaded floral border, silk on linen, 17-1/2 x 16-1/2 in. (sight); probably later stained wood frame fading, repair to left side of verse, losses to silk in several of the building widows, small stain over the "r" in Barry. Notes: This sampler is one of a group of building samplers worked by young girls in Baltimore, Maryland between 1810 to about 1842 and referred to as the eyeglass gate samplers.
