Description
11th-14th century AD. A carved male figure carved in fine-grained sandstone, standing with right hand raised to the chest and left hand to the abdomen; conical headdress with floral band and rosette, long pendant earrings, beaded collar; mounted on a custom-made stand. Figures such as these are decorative elements from pillars within Hindu temples and depict male and female devotees offering flowers and other objects used in worship for the deity enshrined. 7.5 kg, 40cm including stand (15 3/4"). Private collection, North London; acquired in the early 1980s.
