Description
Dynamic beaded baby carrier, Sioux, c. 1900. Beaded on native hide with translucent red & green, yellow, cobalt blue, and metallic silver beads on a light blue field, with a lightening-like pattern toward the bottom, and a terraced box pattern above. The flap at the top rear shows a stepped diamond centered by a swath of gleaming silver metallic beads. Very impressive. The carrier is lined with old cotton cloth, burgundy with tiny white polka dots. This same cloth covers the back as well. The skirt attached to the base of the hide literally doubling the length of the piece is a plainer, more practical fabric - replaceable if and when baby made it necessary, leaving the rest of the carrier intact. There is no mount included with this piece - the stuffing is removable - the feeling here is that a minimal frame that leaves the period cloth lining exposed would be most appealing. Dimensions as is: 31 in. high (with flap) x 11 in. wide x 9 in. deep.
Condition
Beadwork areas in excellent condition, fabrics show wear consistent with age and use.
