Description
Offered for your consideration this Large satin Burmese bowl , 3 extended legs, ribbed round bowl, rim with 9 crimps , glows warmly under black light, ***** Weight :2# 2 oz. *** Measurements: 7.5x7.5x5.75 ***** THE HISTORY OF BURMESE GLASS ***** In 1885, Frederick Shirley, an Englishman who had come to America, patented the formula for an opaque glass sensitive to heat which, when shaded from lemon yellow to salmon pink. As legend has it, when several of Shirley's pieces were presented to Queen Victoria, she exclaimed that the color made her think of a Burmese sunset. Mt. Washington Glass Co., which was owned by Shirley, in New Bedford, MA, adopted the Burmese name. In 1969, after many trials, a Fenton chemist Charles Goe reproduced Shirley's Burmese, & it has become one of the most collectible of the Fenton colors. Burmese contains pure gold, & careful reheating coaxes the delicate pink shading into existence. The yellow color comes from a small amount of depleted uranium in the batch, which also gives the piece a glow under blacklight. Over the years, there has been variation in the color of the yellow from greenish to a cream hue.The current Burmese reflects the original Burmese with a creamier yellow base.
