Item Details
Description
Roman Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. An attractive marble torso of a statue depicting a male figure, most likely Herakles (Hercules), the quintessential hero of ancient times, as he appears to be holding a lion skin. Note the delineated claw of the legendary Nemean lion, a beast so fierce that it could not be killed with mortals' weapons because its golden fur was impervious to attack and its claws were sharper than mortals' swords and could cut through any armour. Custom stand. Size: for the marble itself, 18-3/4" (47.6 cm) H x 9-1/2" (24.1 cm) W; on stand 22" (55.9 cm) H

Provenance: Ex-private east coast collection; ex-private J. Zakos collection, Geneva, Switzerland, acquired 1980's.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
