Description
STAMPED "H.C SMITH / ALEX A / D.C", ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, "1" gallon capacity mark, ovoid form with single incised shoulder ring, slightly arched tab-like handles, and rounded rim, clamshell-pattern cut-off marks under base. Brushed and running cobalt floral decoration on front and stripe below rim, above stamp on reverse, additional cobalt at handles. Made for Hugh Charles Smith (1804-1854) at the Wilkes Street pottery, Alexandria, VA. Circa 1831-1847. 8 1/2" H, 5" D rim.

Condition
Undamaged except for two very shallow chips to top of rim and a minor flake to one handle. Stamp not fully impressed.
