Description
(MCLANE-OCAMPO TREATY)
Fine content A.L.S., 2pp., 4to, Piedras Negras, January 11, 1860, in Spanish, a letter from FELIPE DE LA GARZA to his father, Jesus de la Garza, concerning news of the McLane-Ocampo Treaty of December 14, 1859. In part: "... news came from [New] Orleans on the treaty that President Juarez made with the U.S. The American Union gave President Juarez 2 million in cash, and 2 million retained to pay debts recognized as caused by Mexico to American citizens. For this sum, the Union will build three roads into Mexico, taking for themselves the borderlands, and all merchandise will be free of duty...". The agreement, officially the Treaty of Transit and Commerce, was brought about mainly by the efforts of Ambassador to Mexico Robert Milligan McLane and Mexican Liberal Party politician Melchor Ocampo, but failed to win ratification by the U.S. Senate. The deal would have vastly improved American-Mexican commerce while giving Benito Juarez the funds he needed to resist internal enemies. Moderate stains and wear along folds, else very good.
