(TAIPING REBELLION) PROSPER GIQUEL
(1835 - 1886) French naval officer, Imperial Customs official, and advisor to Chinese government. He served in the in the Anglo-Chinese Occupation Police during the 2nd Opium War. During the Taiping Rebellion (1861), Giquel commanded a Sino-Foreign military contingent, along with the famous British General "Chinese" Gordon who would later be killed at Khartoum. A.L.S., 1 1/2pp. 8vo., Paris to "Mon cher Chalet," in French, sending autograph of Marquis Tseng (1839-90) and giving news from China.
