(CHINA) "CHINESE SHADOWS" BY JULIET BREDON
Very rare book of Chinese poetry: "Chinese Shadows" by Juliet Bredon , a self-published volume and probably her rarest China book, printed by the Pei Kuan Press, the Vostochnoe Prosveschenie Co., [Russian Ecclesiastical Mission Press], Pei Kuan, Peking, China , 1922, with A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.] tipped to the front flyleaf. It reads, in part: "...I am going down to Tientsin that week end and my husband also if he can get away...". Fine. Bredon was the daughter of Sir Robert Bredon, Deputy-General of the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs (IMCS) from 1898-1908, and Acting Inspector-General of the Chinese Customs Service from 1908 to 1910, her uncle was the famous British Consular Official and first Inspector-General of the Imperial Customs Service, and she spent most of her life in China. Bredon wrote a number of detailed volumes on China, all being much-wanted classics by the collectors of old China books. This volume is a collection of 55 translations of old Chinese songs, sketches, inscriptions and impressions.
