(1929-1968) Clergyman and civil rights leader who advocated nonviolent but active and massive confrontation in order to obtain rights for blacks. His book "Why We Can't Wait", (New York: Signet Books), 1964. 160pp. 8vo., paperback. King's book about the nonviolent movement against racial segregation, specifically the 1963 Birmingham campaign. The book describes 1963 as a landmark year in the Civil Rights Movement, and as the beginning of America's "Negro Revolution". Inscribed in blue ballpoint on the inside front cover: "To George Kalif With best wishes and sincere appreciation for your great support. Martin Luther King". Edges of the cover are slightly toned, and a clipping has been tipped to the half title page. Covers slightly worn. In 2002 Kalif would write a biography of King.
