Description
Two oils on board riverscapes, possibly Thomas Campbell (Tennessee 1834-1914) in original gilt carved frames. 1st item: Oil on board scene of three figures in a rowboat with a stone bridge in center ground with three figures and a church spire in background. Initials signed "WW" lower left - work similar to Thomas Campbell. Sight: 7" H x 11 1/2" W, Frame: 15" x 19" W. 2nd item: Oil on board scene of three figures in a rowboat with a wooden bridge in center ground. Unsigned. Note - partial label on back from McCrary Branson Artists Supply Co. Sight: 7 5/8 x 5 5/8, Frame: 13 1/2 H x 10 1/2" W. After spending most of his career as a missionary, Campbell came to Knoxville in 1893 to focus on landscape painting. He was a core member of the Nicholson Art League and participated in the Appalachian Exposition of 1910. In addition to his studio practice, Campbell was active as a teacher and founded the art department at Maryville College. (Bio courtesy Knoxville Museum of Art).

1st item: Overall toning to image. Board loose in frame. Some losses on frame. 2nd item: overall toning to image. Craquelure in center field. Losses on frame, especially along outside inner edge.
