Description
Kentucky tiger maple full stock percussion rifle with eagle patchbox and powder horn, Middle Tennessee history. 1st item - Percussion long rifle with tiger maple full stock, .44 caliber, octagonal barrel, lockplate with foliate designs marked "Leman Lancaster PA", brass fittings and patchbox. Patchbox with the pierced finial profile of a Federal eagle with outstretched wings and a Federal shield, engraved features and engraved foliate design on remainder of patchbox. Small teardrop shaped brass inlay below cheek piece, engraved toe plate and top of butt plate, brass side plate with engraved grouse. Double set triggers with brass trigger guard with spur, brass forend cap. 45 1/2" barrel length. Second quarter of the 19th century. 2nd item - Powder horn with wooden plug secured by nail braids, older patina on horn and plug. Leather strap attached to plug finial and nozzle. A tin measure and hand card wooden measure are included. 10"L. Second quarter of the 19th century. Provenance: Originally owned by Dr. Samuel Mayes (1759-1841), who settled in Columbia, TN after serving in the Revolutionary War, and descended in his family.
Condition
1st item - rifle with older patina, brass trigger guard loose, triggers and hammer nonworking at present, old break and separation to forestock, losses to wood around lockplate near hammer area, older shallow chip to corner of stock at toe, brown / grey patina on barrel. 2nd item - overall very good condition with cracking to leather strap, broken strings holding measures.
