Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 100 BCE to 200 CE. The red slip figurine depicts a male figure wearing an elaborate headdress, neck collar and belt. On this particular piece, you can clearly see the craftsmanship of the sculpture, particularly around the headdress and belt. Several carved decorative features remain on this piece that do not often survive. Flat human figurines were frequently placed within shaft-and-chamber tombs in Jalisco during this time period; similar figures are often described as having a hieratic style with staring eyes and stiff postures. Size: 1-1/2" x 3" x 8".
