Arthur J Hammond (American , b. 1875 - 1947 ) created this plein air oil on canvas masterpiece at the end of his career. Signed A.J. Hammond 1947, the canvas still bears the marks of corner-pins used to separate wet canvases when painting on location. The thick, buttery-textured paint shows brush marks consistent with the confident marks of a master. The coloration is pure Cape Ann School, dominated by rich grey and blue-green water, and a ruddy rocky shore capped with deep moss-green foliage. A lone house stands in silhouette against the sky. The view has been tentatively identified as being from the south shore of Massachusetts, which is one of the locations favored by this prolific artist. The canvas has been lined to strengthen it, and lightly cleaned. Overall, the painting is in excellent condition. It is installed in a frame which post-dates the painting by about 30 years. The frame has some dings and signs of wear, but is attractive. The back of the canvas stretcher bars has been fitted with a protective panel. The canvas size is 17" x 21", The frame is 23.5"x27.5".
